1962 Gibson SG Standard

Gibson SG Values

The Gibson SG is one of the most popular electric guitars ever made, and values vary widely depending on year, model, and originality. Early 1960s SGs—especially those from 1961–1965—typically command the highest prices due to their craftsmanship and association with the original “Les Paul” SG design. Approximate values range from $2,000 to $40,000+, with rare Custom and Standard models bringing the top end of the market.

To determine the accurate value of your SG, consider the following:

  • Model type: Standard, Special, Junior, Custom, SG-I, SG-II, SG-III, etc.

  • Year of manufacture (1961–1965 models are the most valuable)

  • Originality of finish and hardware

  • Pickup type: PAFs, Patent No., Tarbacks, or later varieties

  • Presence of neck repairs (common on SGs)

  • Neck profile and structural condition

  • Serial number and potentiometer codes

  • Vibrola tailpiece originality (e.g., Sideways, Lyre/Maestro)

  • Pickguard style (small-guard vs. batwing)

  • Original electronics and wiring

  • Original case

  • Playability, fret life, and refret history

About the Gibson SG

The Gibson SG (“Solid Guitar”) was introduced in 1961 as a complete redesign of the original Les Paul. With its thin mahogany body, deep double cutaways, and fast-playing neck, the SG offered improved upper fret access and a lighter feel compared to the singlecut Les Paul.

From 1961 to 1963, the model actually carried the Les Paul name, even though the design had changed entirely. The name was officially discontinued in 1963, and the guitar became known simply as the SG.

Throughout the 1960s and 1970s, the SG evolved through various pickup configurations, pickguard shapes, and hardware updates. Today, early SGs remain highly collectible for their tone, light weight, and historical significance.
