For your consideration, Garrett Park Guitars presents this 1951 Gibson LG-2, a slope-shouldered small-body classic from the golden era of postwar Gibson flat-top production.

Introduced in the 1940s as Gibson’s workhorse small-body, the LG-2 quickly earned a reputation for its balanced response, woody warmth, and remarkable projection for its size. This example, bearing a 1951 factory order number (9583-16), retains its original X-braces, original maple bridge plate, and smaller frets—a combination that preserves both structural integrity and the open, responsive voice these early-’50s LG-2s are known for.

Finished in its original sunburst nitrocellulose lacquer, the spruce top displays attractive grain, mild weather checking and natural aging consistent with the period. The finish on the back is somewhat heavier than elsewhere and exhibits possible overspray.

The longer pickguard appears to be original, with no immediate signs of replacement. However, it is worth noting that this larger guard did not become standard until a few years later. The guitar is presently fitted with appropriate reissue Kluson single-line tuners for reliable daily use; the original tuners are included in the case.

Structurally, the instrument is currently stable. There are two cracks located near the endpin (please see photos), both of which are stable.

This 1951 LG-2 represents a fine example of an increasingly sought-after early-’50s Gibson flat-top—lightweight, responsive, and rooted firmly in the company’s most celebrated era of acoustic production. Equally suited to the collector seeking originality and the player in search of a seasoned, small-body vintage voice.

We purchased this guitar from the son of the original owner. He said she played it only sparingly in her youth, and then stored it away in her smoke-free home in Pennsylvania, explaining the guitar's quite clean condition. We believe it will continue to open tonally, deepening its already rich, commanding sound.

It comes complete with its original chipboard case.
