Gibson Serial Numbers

Gibson serial numbers help you authenticate and date your instrument. Locations vary by model and decade:

  • Les Pauls: back of the headstock, neck heel
  • SGs: back of the headstock
  • ES models: back of the headstock, inside F-holes
  • Acoustics (J-45, etc.): inside the soundhole

If you have a Gibson acoustic guitar from the 1940s or '50s, chances are it has a Factory Order Number (FON) rather than a serial number. Learn more about FONs.

Pre-Norlin vs Norlin Era Guitars

In 1969, Gibson was acquired by Norlin, marking a significant change in manufacturing and materials. Understanding these eras is crucial for appraisals, collecting, or buying vintage instruments:

  • Pre-Norlin (1950s–1969): Original craftsmanship, solid wood construction, vintage pickups, and classic finish techniques. Highly sought-after by collectors.
  • Norlin Era (1969–1986): Some changes in neck construction, materials, and hardware. Many guitars still play beautifully, but these differences affect value and collectibility.

Knowing which era your Gibson belongs to helps accurately determine its value and historical significance.
