For your consideration, Garrett Park Guitars presents this 1963 Fender Bassman.
Part of Fender’s celebrated blonde-era lineup, this 6G6-B Bassman represents a pivotal moment in the evolution of the company’s amplifier designs. Known for their bold, punchy low end, sparkling highs, and dynamic touch sensitivity, Bassmans like this deliver the powerful, articulate tone that helped define early-1960s electric guitar and bass recordings. The piggyback configuration pairs a separate head with a matching 2×12 cabinet, offering both visual impact and impressive stage presence while producing a wide, room-filling sound.
This example bears serial number BP05978, placing its production in 1963. It retains the original blonde Tolex covering, which has aged beautifully over the decades and remains in excellent overall condition. Although the original grille cloth shows a few small tears, both the head and cabinet present very well cosmetically, reflecting careful ownership throughout their life.
Inside the head cabinet, the original tube chart remains intact and fully legible. Handwritten service notes are visible on the exposed portion of the chassis—most clearly reading “All tubes / 7-1-73”—suggesting a full tube replacement performed in 1973. These markings add a layer of character and historical charm while also hinting at the attentive maintenance this amplifier has received over the years, helping explain its impressive condition today.
While the chassis has not been opened for internal inspection, the visible components and overall presentation indicate a well-cared-for vintage piece that has clearly been maintained by its previous owners both cosmetically and functionally.
At some point in its life, the original Jensens or Oxfords were replaced with a pair of large Electro-Voice 12" speakers, known for their high power handling and robust, full-bodied response. The cabinet itself appears otherwise unmodified and retains its original speaker cable.
Elsewhere, the amplifier shows a few practical updates consistent with decades of careful use. The original two-prong power cord has been replaced with a modern three-prong plug for improved safety. The cabinet’s tilt-back legs have also been replaced and function as intended, allowing the amp to be angled toward the player. The speaker cabinet handle has been fitted with a woven strap, likely installed to reinforce or replace the original handle after years of use. Should we locate a period-correct replacement handle from our parts inventory prior to shipment, we will gladly install it; otherwise, the current strap remains secure and fully functional.
With its striking blonde aesthetics, desirable circuit, and excellent overall condition, this Bassman represents a wonderful opportunity to acquire a classic early-1960s Fender amplifier—equally compelling for collectors and players seeking the powerful, unmistakable sound of Fender’s blonde era.
We also have a matching Reverb unit (shown with 1961 Telecaster), which makes a great pair to the basement.
