Historical Context

  • Introduction of the Melody Maker: The Melody Maker was first introduced in 1959 as an entry-level guitar but quickly evolved into a model that appealed to a broader audience due to its affordability and quality.
  • 1960s Evolution: By the late 1960s, the Melody Maker began to adopt features from the more prestigious SG line. The 1968 model showcases this transition, combining the simplicity of the Melody Maker with the iconic SG body style. In response to the burgeoning Folk Boom Gibson offered a 12 string version from 1968-1971, discontinuing it in 1971 due to poor sales.
  • Popularity: The 1968 model became popular among rock and folk musicians, known for its versatility and ease of play. The 12 string was not as popular and faded from the Gibson line in 1971.

Several renowned musicians have embraced the Gibson Melody Maker, particularly the SG body style:

  • Jimi Hendrix: Although primarily associated with Fender guitars, Hendrix was known to have experimented with various models, including the Melody Maker, for its unique sound.
  • Kurt Cobain: The Nirvana frontman was famously seen using a Melody Maker, contributing to the model's resurgence in popularity during the grunge era.
  • Bob Dylan: A perennial favorite among folk and rock musicians, Dylan used the Melody Maker in his early days, showcasing its suitability for folk music.
