For your consideration, Garrett Park Guitars presents this 1900's Galiano Grand Concert Acoustic Guitar.
If guitars could only talk! The Galiano Grand Concert Guitar was crafted somewhere between 1910-1925. The Galiano name was used by several New York luthier’s of Italian descent. Most were sold in and around New York City; also, to the Italian immigrant community.
We acquired this fine old lady over the summer and our restoration team went to town on it. There was a fair amount of work to be done, including replacement of the fingerboard which was done with a nicely mottled piece of Brazilian Rosewood as well as a neck reset. The top has numerous splints to repair cracks and some of the the cracks have also been cleated inside. It is hard to imagine when these repairs were done, but the top produces a huge tone for such a demure size. The inlays were saved and reset in the new fingerboard too. The back was removed and a good bit of the old finish was removed and then resprayed with period correct nitro cellulose lacquer. Some of the old stain remains, but the Brazilian Rosewood is stunning and the sound produced from all the 100 year olds is nothing short of magic. All of the braces inside were reglued and the guitar is very structurally sound.
The guitar has a very playable, rounded chunk neck and the action is superb. The lower bout measures 14 ¾” and the upper bout is 10”, the scale length is 26 ¼”. The tone and resonance of this instrument are stunning and it is an amazing example of what fine old guitars came from the New York/New Jersey builders of the day. One can only imagine the stories this old girl could tell if she could talk, but talk and sing she does, and she is ready to make new stories for the lucky new owner.
