1960 Gibson Les Paul Standard
1960s Gibson Les Paul Values
The value of 1960s Gibson Les Pauls varies widely depending on year, configuration, originality, and condition. Because the decade included major design shifts—first the transition to the SG-style “Les Paul” in 1961, and later the reintroduction of the single-cut Les Paul in 1968—market ranges can differ substantially. Approximate values commonly fall between $8,000 and $200,000+, with exceptional instruments bringing significantly more.
To determine the accurate value of your guitar, consider the following:
-
Which 1960s Les Paul model do you own?
-
Is it a 1960 Les Paul Standard transition model, a 1961–63 SG-style “Les Paul,” or a 1968–69 singlecut reissue?
-
Does your guitar have its original finish?
-
Original pickups (e.g., PAFs, Patent No. pickups)?
-
Serial number and potentiometer codes
-
Presence of repaired breaks (headstock or heel)
-
Hardware originality (bridge, tuners, plastics)
-
Neck profile and structural condition
-
Fret condition or refret history
-
Original case
-
Any added routes, replaced parts, or modifications

About the 1960s Les Paul
The 1960s were a transformative decade for Gibson’s Les Paul. Early 1960 saw the final production run of the original Burst-era Les Paul Standard before Gibson discontinued the singlecut design. In 1961, Gibson introduced a dramatically different, thinner double-cutaway body—what we now know as the SG—yet the model continued to carry the “Les Paul” name until 1963.
The Les Paul, as we know it today, returned in 1968 when Gibson reintroduced the singlecut Goldtop and Custom. These late-1960s models have since become highly desirable among players and collectors for their craftsmanship, tone, and connection to the revival of the classic Les Paul silhouette.
