For your consideration, Garrett Park Guitars presents this exceptional 1964 Gibson SG Standard finished in its original, vibrant Cherry Red and equipped with a factory Gibson Vibrola, complete with the original hardshell case.
By 1964, the SG Standard had replaced the Les Paul as Gibson’s premier solidbody electric, defined by its lightweight, deeply contoured mahogany body and powerful humbucking pickups. Instruments from this period are especially prized for their Brazilian rosewood fingerboards, comfortable neck profiles, and the legendary Patent Sticker humbuckers that shaped the sound of countless classic recordings.
This particular example remains in near-mint condition, an increasingly rare distinction for a pre-Norlin SG. The original Cherry Red nitrocellulose lacquer finish is remarkably well-preserved, retaining strong color saturation with minimal fade and only the lightest evidence of careful use. It presents as a true standout — equally compelling as a collector-grade instrument and a serious player.
The one-piece Honduran mahogany neck features a comfortable, slightly chunky profile that fills the hand without feeling cumbersome, offering excellent stability and an inviting feel across the fingerboard. The Brazilian board with trapezoid inlays is clean and unworn, and the guitar plays effortlessly up and down the neck.
Electronics are anchored by a powerful and articulate set of original Gibson Patent Sticker humbuckers, delivering the unmistakable midrange authority, clarity, and dynamic response that define great early-’60s SGs. The pickups balance warmth and bite beautifully, excelling at everything from rich, sustaining leads to aggressive rhythm work. Original reflector knobs, dual volume and tone controls, and a 3-way toggle complete the classic SG control layout.
Hardware includes the factory Gibson Vibrola tailpiece and Tune-o-Matic bridge, all finished in nickel with only minimal tarnishing. The guitar resonates loudly and evenly unplugged, translating to a lively, responsive feel when amplified.
This 1964 SG Standard represents a rare opportunity to acquire a beautifully preserved, original example from one of Gibson’s most celebrated eras—offering iconic looks, ferocious tone, and outstanding playability in equal measure.
It comes complete with its original Gibson hardshell case.
