For your consideration, Garrett Park Guitars presents this 1964 Fender Princeton Reverb (Serial No. A00234)—a remarkably preserved early example of Fender’s legendary small-format blackface combo, prized for its pure tube tone, studio-friendly output, and unmistakable mid-’60s Fender character.
Introduced in 1964, the Princeton Reverb marked a major evolution of the Princeton platform, pairing Fender’s shimmering onboard reverb and bias-vary tremolo with a compact, low-wattage design that quickly became a favorite among recording engineers and discerning players. Revered for its articulate cleans, harmonically rich breakup, and lush, dimensional reverb, the Princeton Reverb remains one of the most musically useful amplifiers Fender ever produced. Early 1964 examples—such as this one—are especially desirable, with period-correct details including the absence of a Fender badge on the grille cloth.
This particular amp presents in excellent cosmetic condition with below-average wear for its age, a clear testament to a life of use rather than abuse. The black Tolex and grille cloth remain exceptionally well preserved and there is only light corrosion visible on the rear panel components, consistent with careful, long-term ownership. Functionally, the amp operates exactly as it should and sounds outstanding, delivering chimey, dimensional cleans and a warm, touch-sensitive overdrive when pushed.
Internally, this Princeton Reverb is 99.9% original. The only non-original component is a professionally installed modern 3-prong power cord, added for safety. Otherwise, the amp retains its original transformers, pots, capacitors, and even its original factory tubes. The Schumacher transformers date to the 39th and 45th weeks of 1964, fully consistent with the amp’s production period. The original Oxford speaker (code 465-443) was sympathetically reconed in 2015, preserving originality while ensuring optimal performance.
The amp underwent a thorough inspection in 2014, at which time all components were verified as original and all tubes tested strong and in good condition. No servicing was required beyond installation of the grounded power cable—a strong indicator of the amp’s exceptional originality and health. In the past decade, it has been used sparingly in a smoke-free, home-studio environment. It comes with a later Fender dust cover.
Altogether, this is a highly original, exceptionally clean early-1964 Fender Princeton Reverb—a textbook example of why these amps are so deeply respected by players and collectors alike. With its rare early features, outstanding condition, and authentic blackface tone, this Princeton Reverb stands as a truly special piece of Fender’s golden-era output.
